How to Continue a Snap Conversation

Saved Messages in Snapchat—EXPLAINED

There are so many ways we can reach each other using our smartphones. There's always the good old phone call and a straightforward SMS when you're in a bind. For the most part, however, we rely on text messaging and video calling apps for everyday communication.

And it's more than just communicating. We've become more attuned to the notion of sharing our lives online. Depending on what your style is, there's at least one social media platform available for you. All of social media offers a mixture of photo/video and text features – and the same applies to Snapchat.

Snapchat Basics

Unless you've made it your mission to avoid social media, the word Snapchat immediately evokes bright yellow and a cute ghost symbol in your mind. It's a very striking logo, one you could probably describe even if you've never actually used the app.

You use Snapchat to share photos, videos, and text, as you do with all social media apps. But what makes this app different is the short-term effect of the content you send. The purpose of sharing snaps and videos is to keep things light and spontaneous among friends, without having to think about it later. It's not meant to help build your long-time online presence, but rather for being silly and enjoying the moment.

It comes as no surprise that this feature appeals immensely to Snapchat's main demographics –ages 18 to 24. When you download Snapchat, the app opens your camera and the snapping can commence. It's to the point, convenient, and allows you to quickly convey whatever you want.

Snapchat Conversations

We've already established how handy and beneficial it can be to have your snaps and texts disappear into thin air. But some of these factors could turn into somewhat of an inconvenience. Say you open a message from your friend but you're not able to give it your full attention right then. Or the message requires a reply but you either can't think of one at the moment or again, you just can't do it now. You open the message and then it disappears, and you have no idea what it said or how you were supposed to answer.

Can We Keep Them?

Archiving Conversations

So, that's how to automatically save conversations on Snapchat and the whole 24 hours you get to keep them. But, you can also preserve them longer by archiving them. Maybe there's something of special significance that you just don't want to forget yet. Here's what you need to do to save your conversations long-term on Snapchat:

  1. Open the app and go to Chats on the bottom left.
  2. Open the conversation of the friend whose message you want to save.
  3. Tap on the message and press and hold.

That's it, the message will be archived. It's important to remember that both parties will see that messages were saved, but only the person who archived the conversation can unsave it back. And they can do that by pressing and holding the message again. The saved conversation will be highlighted in gray for both parties.

Snapchat Is Meant to Be Fun

It's always great to know you have options, even when you don't end up using them. Snapchat is for quick exchanges and instant sharing, without the burden of what's posted where, and an accumulation of likes and shares, etc. In case you're using it as a text messaging tool, specifically for the fact that you don't need to scroll up and down and read back, you know it's not going to be there. However, if there's a moment or a snap-in-time that you do want to save for a little longer, or a lot longer, it's great to know that you can do it.
